Getting Here/The Romance of Wilderness Travel
Getting to the lodge is a fun, interesting, and scenic part of your adventure. Floating peacefully in a private wilderness setting on remote Baker Island, Blackfish Lodge is only accessible by floatplane or boat. The lodge is about 35 miles northeast, across Queen Charlotte Strait, from Port McNeill (which is located on the northeastern edge of Vancouver Island).

To see a wide-area satellite photo of the area click here. To see more detailed, zoomed-in satellite photo of the area with Baker Island as the main feature and the lodge's tiny little bay slightly above and right of center, click here. You can keep zooming for even more detail. For those of you with a detailed local map or nautical chart, Baker Island is just west of the small community of Echo Bay, Gilford Island. The latitude/longitude/GPS coordinates are as follows: N 50:45:155, W 126:32:391.

FROM SEATTLE BY AIR
If you are flying in by plane to Seattle from another city, you will arrive at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, just south of the city. There are several methods to fly from Seattle to Blackfish Lodge. Please note that beginning January 8, 2007 passports are required for ALL passengers travelling from Seattle to Blackfish Lodge.

1. Via in-season direct floatplane service: You will probably need to stay in Seattle overnight in order to catch your floatplane flight the next morning. As part of your package we will reserve a floatplane flight for you with Kenmore Air. Kenmore Air is one of the largest and most highly regarded floatplane operators in the world.

From approximately mid-May through late-September, Kenmore Air has regularly scheduled flights that will take you directly to Blackfish Lodge from their North Seattle terminal. Weather permitting; the view out the windows on these flights is spectacular! Flights leave Seattle around 9:00 AM and arrive at the lodge around noon. Return flights from the lodge depart around noon and arrive back in Seattle around 3:00 PM.

Flying to the lodge, Canadian customs and immigration clearances are typically accomplished with a routine stop in Nanaimo, B.C.----about 1 hour into your flight. Returning to Seattle, US customs and immigration procedures area accomplished at the Kenmore Air terminal.

2. Via combination commuter flight and floatplane: Air Canada operates regular commuter service from Seattle to Vancouver,B.C. with connections to Campbell River, B.C. Depending on how those connections work, you may have some waiting time, or possibly an overnight in Campbell River. You can then connect with the daily floatplane service to our area offered by Vancouver Island Air (250) 287-2433.

FROM VANCOUVER
From Vancouver, you can get to Blackfish Lodge via several methods.

BY AIR OR WATER
The first way is to take Pacific Coastal Airlines’ regularly scheduled land plane service from Vancouver to Campbell River, then a 15 minute land transfer to the seaplane base in Campbell River. From there, you can catch a floatplane flight on Vancouver Island Air (250) 287-2433. The flight from Campbell River is approx. one hour and will deliver you directly to Blackfish Lodge.

The second way is to take a commercial flight on Pacific Coastal Airlines to Port Hardy. You can then arrange for a floatplane flight (in Port McNeill phone Pacific Eagle @ 250.956.3339 or Vancouver Island Air at 250.956.8247), or water taxi (Port McNeill Water Taxi; phone toll free at 1.877.956.3431, direct at 250.956.3431, or e-mail cachus@telus.net) from Port McNeill to take you directly to the lodge. If you fly in to Port Hardy, you will need to take a taxi/limo service from the Port Hardy airport to the seaplane or water taxi base at Port McNeill.

BY DRIVING AND AIR/WATER
You can also drive from Vancouver (or Victoria) to Campbell River or Port McNeill. This will take the better part of a day. From Vancouver, take a B.C. ferry to Nanaimo (about 2 hours) from either Tsawwassen, south of Vancouver, or Horseshoe Bay, a little northwest of Vancouver. Once you get off the BC Ferry in Nanaimo, it is about a 2 hour drive to Campbell River or a 4-5 hour drive to Port McNeill. You’ll still need to arrange for floatplane or water taxi service (see above) to the lodge and, depending on when you arrive, you may need to stay overnight in Port McNeill.
