In 1988, Chris Bennett decided to fulfill the dream of owning his own
British Columbia fishing lodge. For folks wanting a great Canada fishing lodge vacation, he designed and built a solid floating structure that would provide
a cozy, personal, and comfortable place for his guests to visit.
Whether you're here on a salmon fishing trip or freshwater fishing trip, it all begins when you land at the generous dock and walk into the lodge. Youll
be greeted by the lodges lovely scent of cedar. Lunch will be on
the table shortly. At the end of your day of fishing, youll come
home to a genuine B.C. floathouse, and to the relaxed and
personal atmosphere that defines Blackfish Lodge. The fireplace will warm,
a glass of your favorite beverage will relax you, and our fine and sumptuous
food will satisfy. Youll drift off to sleep hearing the sound of
water lapping outside your window---quietly aware that tomorrow will bring
new angling delights.
Using red and yellow cedar from the nearby forests,
Chris and local craftsmen milled the lumber on site and worked together
to build Blackfish Lodge. The lodge is cozily heated by a woodstove and
has solar power and a generator to provide electricity (we turn the generator off for sleeping). There is no TV, but wireless internet access is provided.
Each private room has two beds and its own shower-equipped bathroom. There
is also a kitchen, dining area, and a modest living room, all with spectacular
views. We have an widely varied collection of CDs, and an upright piano for those who like
music during their time at the lodge. Youre also welcome to bring
your own music (CD or cassette tapes) to set the mood of your trip. Finally,
the lodge is wheelchair accessible.
We believe that providing ample, high quality, and delicious food adds
to the overall pleasure of your visit. Meals are served and cooked family-style.
Our cooks will delight you with both the quality and quantity of food.
Of course, we have famous British Columbia seafood delicacies: fresh crab, prawns,
salmon and halibut. Dependable refrigeration and good access to fresh
produce ensure both variety and quality of meat and produce. So, you may
find homemade soup, prime rib, lamb, fresh salads, pasta, and vegetables
on any given night. We also do much of our own baking. Award winning Okanogan
Valley and imported wines, beer, and other beverages are also provided.
If youre going to be out on an all day salmon or fly fishing trip, well
make sure that there is a generous supply of food and hot and cold drinks
on the boat. You can certainly request any preferred foods in advance
of your visit. We will also be able to accommodate most dietary restrictions.
Again, just let us know in advance or by filling out our guest preferences
worksheet.
Parties of six will have exclusive use of the lodge. The lodges
maximum capacity is 6 adult guests.
Located within the southern confines of the new Great Bear Rainforest preserve and framed by the rugged mountains of the Coast Range to the east and beautiful
Vancouver Island to the west, the wilderness area that surrounds Blackfish
Lodge is spectacular. Vertical rock walls plunge into the ocean and 5,000+
foot mountains brood over inlets and fjords. A rich variety of wildlife
is experienced each day of your visit. Untouched streams tumble through
lovely rich forests to join the saltwater. The scent of cedar is borne
on the breezes.
Other interesting sights and activities will keep you
occupied in your non-fishing hours. Explore pristine saltwater lagoons,
or go whale or bird watching. Have a long picnic lunch in the Burdwoodsone
of the most unique and loveliest spots on the West Coast. Perhaps just
enjoy curling up with a good book in front of the lodges cozy woodstove.
No Canada fishing lodge vacation, salmon fishing trip, or fly fishing trip is complete without many opportunities for various kinds of animal watching experiences.
The waters of Blackfish Sound, Johnstone Strait, Knight Inlet, and Kingcome
Inlet are home to a large and famous concentration of orca whales. Other
marine mammals that frequent the area are harbor porpoises, Dall´s
porpoise, Pacific whitesided dolphins, harbor seals, Minke whales and
grey whales.
Bald eagles are a very common sight as are ravens,
kingfishers, and herons. A large variety of other aquatic birds are also
present. As you are fishing or moving from place to place, you may see
bears, deer, mink, otter, and beaver.
The
local area offers you a number of fascinating diversions. Visit the very eclectic Billys
Museum and Gift Shop in the nearby hamlet of Echo Bay. Stop by and see
well-known local artist and potter, Yvonne
Maximchuk. For a very modest hourly extra charge, our guests can arrange
to take Yvonnes individualized painting (watercolor and/or acrylic)
or ceramics instruction. Visit a First Nations woodcarver and purchase
wonderful masks and carvings directly from this skilled craftsman. The
region has a rich native heritage and there are sites displaying rock
paintings, burial grounds, old villages and many other aspects of British Columbia's coastal
Indian history.
Late in 2004 we acquired two kayaks for our guests' use. Both a one-person and two-person kayak will be available for paddling fun at no charge to Blackfish Lodge guests. There are some nice spots to visit. A liability waiver signature is required prior to use.
Our guests can enjoy many of these extra pursuits at
no additional charge. Advance notice is advisable for some of these activities.
